In this engaging curriculum lesson, students will explore the power of infographics as a tool for transforming complex information into clear, engaging visuals. They will learn about the different types of infographics and their applications, gaining skills in data interpretation, effective communication, and collaboration. Objectives:
Understand what infographics are and their role in visual communication.

Introduction to Infographics: Discuss what infographics are and why they are effective. Show examples of different types of infographics to illustrate their diversity and applications.
Types of Infographics Exploration: Guide students through the eight kinds of infographics, explaining each type’s purpose and characteristics. Students will analyze examples to understand how each type presents information differently.
Benefits and Understanding of Infographics: Activities using the Frayer Model and the Depth and Complexity Icons help students recognize examples and non-examples of infographics as well as the big idea, rules, patterns and how they are used across disciplines. Data Collection: Students will generate four questions they would like to ask their classmates related to their interests or school topics. Next, they will collect the information from their classmates and analyze the data, then brainstorm how to visually represent it using infographics.
Creating Infographics: Students will design an infographic to present the data creatively and effectively. Assessment: Assessment will be based on students’ understanding of infographics, their ability to interpret data effectively, and the creation of their infographic. A rubric and Exit Ticket are included. Extensions: A list of extension opportunities are included in the curriculum. Conclusion: By the end of this curriculum lesson, students will have a deeper understanding of infographics as powerful tools for visual storytelling. They will have honed their data interpretation and communication skills while fostering collaboration with peers. This activity not only builds foundational skills in information literacy but also creates a collaborative and engaging classroom environment at the beginning of the school year.
